Flo and I are taking a cruise in March. In planning for the trip, we found
out that Homeland Security is requiring passports starting in 2007 for
visits to Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean including cruise trips. It's
recommended to have passports this year but a driver's license and certified
birth certificate will suffice till the end of the year. Many Post Offices
around the country have been set up to do the processing because of the
expected volumes. Post Office locations can be found and application forms
downloaded from web site:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html
The cost is about $95. It takes about 6 weeks. To expedite
and get it in 2 weeks costs another $80. You can't pay by credit card, only
check or money order. If you have an old passport, you need to bring it with
you as it is submitted with the application. Caution, they take your
certified birth certificate and submit it with the application. You get the
birth certificate returned with your passport but you'll need it this year
if you travel to any of these locations before receiving your passport. |
