Return of Colossus marks D-Day
The story of the Brits working away during WW2 at
Bletchley Park, England in order to break the Ultra code of the secret
German Enigma encrypting machines is well known, especially since it has
been made into a not-very-good Hollywood movie ("Enigma"). What has only
recently been revealed is that part of the work led to the development of
one of the world's first digital computers, named Colossus. It was so secret
that it was dismantled and stored at the end of the war, and how it worked
remained classified well into the 1990s. Now a team of computer enthusiasts
has re-created the successor Colossus Mk 2 in all its vacuum tube and paper
tape reader glory, and the BBC has a nice report on it. (Netsurfer Digest)
